The coyote Club
Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn · Bar · Food options available · Cash only
Every neighborhood needs a Coyote Club. It has a lot of the ideals of a good dive: you walk in and the floor isn't sticky, the draft beer doesn't taste like the lines haven't been cleaned since the Bloomberg administration, and yet the place has so much character. It's clean without being corporate. The owners have another spot or two in Brooklyn, so it's not some scrappy one-and-done but you'd never call it a chain, either. It threads the needle almost perfectly.
Here's the one honest asterisk: the place has only been around since 2018/2019, making it an older-than-it-is bar built to look like it's been on Throop Ave forever. But it never tips into inauthentic. It's the good kind of illusion that I’m happy to fall for whenever I’m there.
The Room
Retro decor, warm ambiance, horse girl artwork, a genuinely nice vibe that doesn't feel overly curated. There's free water (a small thing but important thing!), pinball, and two or three bathrooms, enough that you're not doing the shuffle-dance in line. Let’s talk about the bathrooms for a second because depending on your level of imbibing, the 360 degree mirrors can either be an impromptu Instagram photoshoot dream, or an acid trip nightmare.
The catch is seating. There are maybe five or six booths, and they are highly coveted. Snag one on a busy night and you'll be enjoying it under the polite, unblinking stares of everyone waiting for your party to wrap up. Consider yourself warned, and consider yourself lucky.
The Pour
This is where Coyote Club earns its stripes. The beers are cheap, cold, and taste like the taps get cleaned. A trifecta that's rarer than it should be. There's a solid happy hour (Yelp regulars clock it around 5–9 daily), and the drafts do exactly what you want them to. The cocktails are a little different every visit. I’ve personally witnessed many succumb to their Cosmos that always taste a little different each visit. But the inconsistency somehow adds to the charm rather than subtracting from it. At another bar that'd be a knock. Here, it's a personality trait.
The People
It's a local spot, and it feels like one. Bed-Stuy loves Coyote Club and Coyote Club loves Bed-Stuy.. It gets packed on a late Friday or Saturday, and those booths become even more precious. But in all that crush, no bad interactions, no locals-only gatekeepers, no attitude. The bartenders get slammed and can be busy, but nobody's ever been rude. The crowd runs welcoming, which is the whole ballgame.
The Extras
Two words: cheap hot dog. A classic boiled dog with some ketchup and mustard, don't-ask-what's-in-it, tastes-great-anyway. Cold beer plus a cheap hot dog is a hard combo to beat. There's pinball and a photobooth inside, and there's usually a taco truck parked outside. The tacos and burritos won't change your life, but two Cosmos deep they absolutely get the job done, and the quesadillas are genuinely good.
The "Your Spot" Factor
Cheap, accessible, great vibe, welcoming crowd. It's built to become a regular. Roll in on a weeknight or early in the evening and you can actually have a conversation and maybe even land a booth. Show up late on a Friday and you're signing up for a scrum, which, if that's the night you're after, is also a perfectly good time.
